The 1970's brought about further change for the Steam Packet Company. In 1972, the first diesel car ferry entered service - the Mona's Queen.

This meant that Manxman became a seasonal vessel.

The 1970's also saw the withdrawal of three more of Manxman's sister ships. Tynwald in 1974, King Orry in 1975 and Snaefell in 1978 leaving just the Manxman and Mona's Isle in service. It was clear that both ship's days were numbered.
