The 1960's saw the introduction of car ferry services throughout the UK and the Isle of Man was no exception - except the Steam Packet did things a little differently. Rather than introduce a stern loading or bow and stern loading car ferry the opted for side a side loading system which used an internal spiral ramp which had access points at various levels on the ships side The arrival of the second car ferry in 1966 meant that Manxman could enjoy at least part of the winter in lay up in Birkenhead, appearing to cover for the car ferries as required. |
